Peshawari Kehwa & Healthy Ageing: A Tradition Worth Keeping
Share
Losing my father at the age of 62 made me think differently about health and ageing.
After marriage, I also had the opportunity to experience life in Hajiabad, a village in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, where several generations of one family could still be seen sharing the same home, meals and everyday routines.
I remember peaceful mornings when the older members of the family would sit outside in the winter sun while someone brought a warm cup of Peshawari Kehwa.
Seeing people remain active well into older age naturally made me wonder:
Was there something in their lifestyle that we were missing in city life?
Over time, I realized there probably was not one secret.
And it certainly was not one cup of tea.
Healthy ageing is influenced by many things, including food, movement, environment, social connection, genetics, healthcare and everyday habits.
Peshawari Kehwa was simply one small but meaningful part of that wider lifestyle.
Is Peshawari Kehwa the Secret to a Long Life?
No single food or drink can guarantee a longer life.
The contrast between one person living into their 90s and another passing away earlier cannot be explained by one habit.
Healthy ageing is shaped by many factors.
The World Health Organization emphasizes that diet, physical activity, environment and maintaining functional ability all play important roles in ageing well. Social connection also matters for physical and mental wellbeing.
So we would not say:
“Drink Kehwa and you will live longer.”
A more realistic takeaway is:
Small daily habits can become part of a healthier overall lifestyle.
For many families in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Kehwa is one of those habits.
Why Is Peshawari Kehwa Such an Important Tradition?
Kehwa is more than a beverage in many Pashtun households.
It is part of:
- Welcoming guests
- Family conversations
- After-meal routines
- Winter mornings
- Evening gatherings
- Everyday hospitality
In Hajiabad, a cup of Kehwa often came with something equally important:
people sitting together.
That matters because healthy ageing is not only about nutrients.
WHO recognizes social connection as an important contributor to health, wellbeing and quality of life, particularly as people grow older.
Sometimes the value of a tea ritual lies just as much in who you share it with as in what is inside the cup.
What Is Peshawari Kehwa?
Peshawari Kehwa is a traditional green tea enjoyed across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and other parts of Pakistan.
Grans Peshawari Kehwa is made with premium-quality sun-dried green tea leaves and is packed without artificial flavours or preservatives.
It has a:
- Light taste
- Fresh aroma
- Earthy character
- Naturally simple preparation
It can be enjoyed plain or with a little Desi Gurr, Desi Shakkar or Honey according to taste.
What Does Research Say About Green Tea?
Green tea has been studied extensively because it naturally contains compounds such as polyphenols and caffeine.
Research has explored possible relationships between green tea and:
- Cardiovascular health
- Cholesterol
- Body weight
- Cognitive health
- Certain chronic diseases
However, the evidence is not strong enough to say that green tea itself prevents disease or extends lifespan.
The U.S. National Center for Complementary and Integrative Health notes that while green tea has been studied widely, firm conclusions cannot be reached for many of the health claims commonly made about it. Human studies on cancer have also produced inconsistent results.
That is why we prefer to keep the claims simple.
Can Peshawari Kehwa Support a Healthy Routine?
Yes, in a practical sense.
When enjoyed without large amounts of added sugar, Kehwa can be a light everyday drink.
For example, you can choose it instead of:
- Sugary soft drinks
- Heavily sweetened tea
- High-calorie café drinks
That does not make Kehwa a weight-loss treatment.
It simply makes it an easy beverage option within a balanced routine.
Does Peshawari Kehwa Help With Weight Loss?
We would not make that claim.
Green tea is often marketed for weight loss, but evidence suggests any effect is modest and varies between products and individuals. It should not be treated as a slimming solution.
If maintaining a healthy weight is important, the bigger picture includes:
- Overall diet
- Portion sizes
- Physical activity
- Sleep
- Long-term habits
Kehwa can fit into that routine, but it does not replace it.
Does Peshawari Kehwa Prevent Heart Disease or Cancer?
No.
The current published article makes claims that Kehwa can reduce heart disease risk and protect against several cancers.
We would remove those claims.
Green tea research is interesting, but studies do not justify presenting a cup of Kehwa as prevention or treatment for cardiovascular disease, cancer, Alzheimer's disease or Parkinson's disease.
Food and drink should not be promoted as substitutes for appropriate healthcare.
What We Actually Learned From Hajiabad
Looking back, what impressed me about life in the village was not simply that people drank Kehwa.
It was the combination of everyday habits.
People walked more.
Families spent time together.
Traditional home-cooked food remained important.
Meals and tea were often shared.
Daily life followed a different rhythm from the constant rush of the city.
That does not mean village life guarantees longevity or city life causes poor health.
It simply reminds us that healthy ageing is usually built from many small habits rather than one miracle ingredient.

Healthy Ageing Is Bigger Than One Cup of Tea
There is no single secret to reaching 90.
Genetics matter.
Healthcare matters.
Movement matters.
Diet matters.
Social connection matters.
Environment matters.
And sometimes, small rituals help hold those pieces together.
For our family, Peshawari Kehwa is one of those rituals.
Not because we believe it guarantees a longer life, but because it represents something worth preserving:
a warm drink, a slower moment and time shared with the people around us.
