Desi Shakkar Wala French Toast for Kids
Share
As a mother of a three-year-old, I know how unpredictable mealtimes can be.
Some days, children happily finish what is on their plate. On other days, even familiar foods suddenly become difficult.
One simple breakfast that has worked well in our home is French toast made with egg, milk, Desi Ghee and a little Desi Shakkar.
It is quick to prepare, uses familiar ingredients, and can be served with fruit or yogurt to make a more complete breakfast.
Easy French Toast Recipe for Kids
Ingredients
- 1 egg
- 1–2 teaspoons Grans Desi Shakkar
- 1 teaspoon fresh cream, optional
- A small splash of milk
- 1 slice of bread
- A small amount of Grans Cow Desi Ghee for cooking
How to Make Desi Shakkar French Toast
1. Prepare the Egg Mixture
Crack the egg into a bowl and whisk well.
Add:
- Milk
- Fresh cream, if using
- Desi Shakkar
Mix until combined.
2. Dip the Bread
Place the bread into the egg mixture and coat both sides evenly.
Allow it to absorb the mixture without becoming so soft that it breaks apart.
3. Cook in Desi Ghee
Heat a small amount of Desi Ghee in a pan over medium-low heat.
Place the coated bread in the pan and cook until golden on both sides.
Make sure the egg mixture is fully cooked through, particularly when serving young children.
USDA food-safety guidance recommends thoroughly cooking eggs and egg-containing dishes because raw or undercooked eggs can carry Salmonella.
4. Serve
Allow the French toast to cool to a child-safe temperature.
You can serve it with:
- Banana slices
- Berries or other soft fruit
- Plain yogurt
- A small glass of milk
Cut it into manageable pieces according to your child's age and eating ability.
Why Use Desi Shakkar?
We use Grans Desi Shakkar because it gives the French toast a deeper sugarcane flavour than refined white sugar.
Only a small amount is needed.
Desi Shakkar is still a form of added sugar, so we would not recommend using large quantities or presenting it as a source of iron or other nutrients for children.
A child's overall diet matters much more than the type of sweetener used in one recipe.
Can I Make It Less Sweet?
Absolutely.
You can:
- Reduce the Shakkar to 1 teaspoon
- Leave it out entirely
- Add naturally sweet fruit such as banana alongside the toast
Children do not need every breakfast to taste very sweet.
Current nutrition guidance continues to emphasize limiting added sugars and prioritizing nutrient-dense foods for children.
What If My Child Is a Picky Eater?
It is common for young children to go through phases where their appetite and food preferences change.
Rather than turning one recipe into a “solution” for picky eating, we prefer using simple strategies:
- Keep portions manageable
- Offer familiar foods alongside new foods
- Avoid forcing the child to finish everything
- Include different colours and textures over time
- Keep mealtimes calm
- Speak with a pediatrician or dietitian if eating difficulties are persistent or affecting growth
For us, this French toast is simply one easy recipe that has worked well at home.
It may become a favourite in your kitchen too.
