Namkeen Sattu Drink Recipe with Lemon, Mint & Cumin

Namkeen Sattu Drink Recipe with Lemon, Mint & Cumin

Namkeen Sattu is a simple savoury summer drink made with roasted barley Sattu, lemon, cumin, mint, black salt and raw mango.

It is quick to prepare, refreshing in warm weather, and gives Northese Barley Sattu a completely different flavour from the sweeter Sattu Shakkar version.

Ingredients

  • ½ cup Northese Barley Sattu
  • 4 cups chilled water
  • 2 teaspoons lemon juice
  • ½ teaspoon roasted cumin powder
  • 2 teaspoons chopped mint leaves
  • Black salt, according to taste
  • 2 teaspoons grated raw mango
  • Ice cubes

How to Make Namkeen Sattu Drink

1. Mix the Sattu

Add the Barley Sattu to a jug.

Pour in a small amount of chilled water first and mix until smooth.

Gradually add the remaining water while stirring to help prevent lumps.

2. Add the Flavours

Add:

  • Lemon juice
  • Roasted cumin powder
  • Mint
  • Black salt
  • Grated raw mango

Mix thoroughly.

3. Taste and Adjust

Taste the drink and adjust the lemon, black salt or cumin according to preference.

If the raw mango is particularly sour, you may want to use slightly less lemon.

4. Serve Chilled

Pour into glasses with ice cubes.

Garnish with a few fresh mint leaves and serve immediately.

Tips for a Better Sattu Drink

  • Mix the Sattu with a little water first to avoid lumps.
  • Use chilled water for a more refreshing drink.
  • Add black salt gradually because its flavour can become strong quickly.
  • Stir before serving, as Sattu naturally settles at the bottom.
  • Adjust the raw mango according to how sour it is.
